Just in Case . . .

Sometimes we have glitches with the internet connection in Italy so if nothing appears here for a few days that's what's happening. We'll try to get it fixed but who knows what's happening out there in cyber space!

Oct. 5 - A Fine Day to Cook

On Monday we enjoyed a great day on a food and cooking tour with Walkabout Florence.  We started out with our guide, Raissa, at 10 a.m. to walk around Florence and hear food related history.  At a stop at a local produce market we purchased the tomatoes and fresh basil for the bruschetta we would be making at the cooking class.  Moving on, we had a coffee break at the Verrazzano Caffe and bakery where we bought fresh bread for the class.   Then we were off to the central food market to buy cheese and meat for our upcoming feast.  After our market tour we took a bus up into the hillside above Florence to a lovely location for the afternoon cooking experience.  Carmella was our energetic and fun-loving chef in the state of the art kitchen where the class took place.  It was definitely hands-on as we all participated in the making of the fabulous meal.  We started with bruschetta and chianti wine, then made our own pizzas with instruction from Arla, a professional pizza maker.  The outdoor wood-fired pizza oven heats up to 700 degrees and a pizza will cook in 90 seconds!  They were delicious!  Next we prepared the pork roast and potatoes, make our own pasta, ragu sauce and two desserts - tiramisu and gelato.  They say a picture is worth a thousand words so take a look and you'll see what a great time we had today!  P.S. Carol did not join us today but took an independent tour to Assisi and Cortona.
